Chapter Four Wanted
Ahava had thankfully been left apparently alone in the large room suite that was his temporary accommodation while in the palace. Wondering for a second time if he should disappear for a while, he heard knocking on the large ornately carved wooden door. It was then open, and one of the generalâs soldiers walked in with a few maids following him.
The soldier politely saluted Ahava and then said, âThe general thought that you might like some food to your taste.â
In a few seconds, the maid had placed several large bowls on a table at the edge of the room. Ahava commented, âVery considerate of the general. Give him my thanks.â
As the maids left with the generalâs man, Ahava picked up the covering of the dishes. He recognized the food as it was something he had ordered many times in the empire. Taking a deep breath, he took in the smell and then stopped.
Something is not right with the smell. It smells a bit too sweet from my memory.
Remembering the previous time he had eaten something that didnât agree with him. He thought surely nobody would poison the emperor. He scanned the food with a mixture of aethereal, air, and earth elemental powers. The result shocked him to the core as not only was the food poisoned, the dose was enough to kill hundreds of people. Thinking for a second, he pushed the dish to the side. Then he stood up and rang the bell. In an instant, a maid was in asking what he wanted. Ahava simply sent for the general to see if he could get to the bottom of this, as the food had supposedly come from him.
When the large burly man entered, he saluted. Ahava acknowledged his salute and then asked, âGeneral, you strike me as a competent type of person.â
âIâve always aimed to achieve what I set out to do. Why do you ask my Lord?â
Ahava pointed to the bowls of food still steaming in the room. He asked, âDo you notice anything wrong with the food?â
From his waist, the general took out a small token. He then moved over to the food and activated the token. Frowning and whistling in a low voice. He spoke, âNot very subtle!â
Ahava nodded and commented, âEven I could tell by the smell that something was wrong. General, my speculation is that somebody is trying to frame you for poisoning me as I believe that you wouldnât be that incompetent if you really wanted to try and kill me.â
The general asked with an expression of deep concern written across his face, âThey told you that the food came from me?â
Ahava informed him of how the food was served. Then he observed, âThe smell was so sweet that it was easy to be alerted to the poisoning. Which makes me wonder what is going on. I am sure that you would know how to poison somebody effectively. My first guess is that somebody is trying to drive a wedge between us.
